Catalyst One Chemistry Analyzer
Catalyst proBNP Test
Some things are worth the wait.
Heart disease isn’t one of them.
Get quantitative insights into cardiac health for both canine and feline patients, right at the point‑of‑care. With the Catalyst proBNP Test, you’ll get cardiac results in about 16 minutes, during the patient visit. So you can go from suspicion to insight in a heartbeat.

Next steps begin with thoughtful first steps.
Whether you’re assessing subclinical heart disease in cats, staging myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs, or differentiating causes of breathing difficulty, our diagnostic algorithms can help guide your path forward.
The proof is in the paper.
In a recent study, the Catalyst proBNP Test demonstrated minimal bias, excellent precision, and strong correlation with the IDEXX Reference Laboratories’ Cardiopet proBNP Test, indicating its accuracy and reliability as a point-of-care measurement for both dogs and cats.

Frequently asked questions
N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a blood biomarker that can be used to help detect and monitor heart disease in dogs and cats. NT-proBNP is released in proportion to the amount of stretch and strain on cardiac myocytes. IDEXX offers NT-proBNP testing through IDEXX Reference Laboratories with the Cardiopet proBNP Test for both dogs and cats as well as in-clinic with the Catalyst proBNP Test for dogs and cats and the SNAP Feline proBNP Test for cats only.
The Catalyst proBNP Test has been validated for use on both cats and dogs.
The sample types supported by the Catalyst proBNP Test include serum, lithium heparin plasma, and whole blood using the Catalyst Lithium Heparin Whole Blood Separator. Diluted samples are not supported.
Note: The supported sample types differ from the IDEXX Reference Laboratories’ Cardiopet proBNP Test, which supports EDTA plasma for canine testing and serum or EDTA plasma for feline testing, and from the SNAP Feline proBNP Test, which supports serum or EDTA plasma.
There are 6 tests per box. Each test includes a single slide plus a reagent consumable.
Yes, the Catalyst proBNP Test can be run alongside other Catalyst tests. Electrolyte slides should always be loaded first. Recommended load order is Lyte 4 CLIP, chemistry CLIP, any additional slides, and then the Catalyst proBNP slide on top. For the Catalyst Dx Chemistry Analyzer, the Catalyst proBNP slide must be loaded within the first 18 slides and cannot be run with other slides that include a reagent (e.g., TT4, PHBR, CRP, PROG, or Bile Acids).
When run alone, the Catalyst proBNP Test results are available approximately 16 minutes after the start of the run. When run with other Catalyst tests, run time will vary.
A test-specific interpretive comment is provided with each result in VetConnect PLUS and IDEXX VetLab Station. Additionally, select the book icon to access differential diagnoses, which provide expert guidance on interpreting results and determining next steps.
Use case–specific diagnostic algorithms are also available:
- Cats with cardiac concerns
- Small- to medium-breed dogs with a murmur
- Cats with respiratory clinical signs
- Dogs with respiratory clinical signs
Both tests provide quantitative results for dogs and cats. As shown in a Catalyst proBNP Test white paper (linked), the Catalyst proBNP Test has strong correlation with IDEXX Reference Laboratories’ Cardiopet proBNP Test.
Note: The Catalyst proBNP Test supports the use of serum, lithium heparin plasma, and whole blood using the Catalyst Lithium Heparin Whole Blood Separator. This differs from the IDEXX Reference Laboratories’ Cardiopet proBNP Test, which supports the use of EDTA plasma for canine testing and serum or EDTA plasma for feline testing.
The SNAP Feline proBNP Test is only available for cats, and results are interpreted as normal or abnormal. The Catalyst proBNP Test supports both canine and feline samples and provides fully quantitative results.
Note: The Catalyst proBNP Test supports the use of serum, lithium heparin plasma, and whole blood using the Catalyst Lithium Heparin Whole Blood Separator. This differs from the SNAP Feline proBNP Test, which supports serum or EDTA plasma.
